A penis pump (also known as a vacuum pump or vacuum erection pump) is a device used to help men with erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence achieve an erection firm enough for penetrative sex. They are also used to create a firmer, slightly larger erection temporarily.

Do penis pumps work?
The short answer is yes; they are suitable for achieving an erection for those who can’t naturally or temporarily add a little girth, length, and firmness to a naturally achieved erection. Penis pumps can’t permanently make a penis larger and shouldn’t be used to enlarge a penis. Let us explain.
How does a penis pump work?
To understand how penis pumps work, you need to understand the basics of achieving an erection. An erection is achieved when the penis fills with blood like a balloon. It’s a complicated process where many things need to go right, but the balloon analogy is all you need to know.
A penis pump is a cylinder with a pumping mechanism on one end and an opening with a seal mechanism on the other end. The cylinder is placed over the penis, and the pumping mechanism creates a negative pressure that draws blood into the penis to produce an erection.
Are penis pumps safe?
Penis pumps are generally considered safe when they’re used properly. It’s important that you read the pump’s directions before use and discontinue use immediately if you feel any pain or discomfort.
The Food and Drug Administration warns that using a penis pump can aggravate conditions such as priapism.
You should not use a pump if you have a blood disorder, use blood thinners, or have a history of blood clots.
Can a penis pump make my penis bigger?
According to the Mayo Clinic, penis pumps can’t make a penis permanently bigger, but they might temporarily make it a tiny bit larger and firmer. Here’s why.
The penis has a membrane similar to the inner tube of a bike wheel. Think of the outer rubber of the bike wheel as the skin of the penis. When the membrane or the inner tube is filled, it becomes firm and takes its shape. The membrane or inner tube shouldn’t be filled too far past its maximum pressure because it could become deformed or injured.
That membrane has a natural limit in size and shape. If it’s stretched too far beyond its limit, permanent damage or injury can occur.
The body has built-in checks-and-balances that don’t allow an erection to go beyond its size limit. A penis pump bypasses these checks-and-balances and should be used with caution.
Precautions you should take while using a penis pump.
Shave pubic hair. Pubic hair will get tangled in the penis ring and cause a painful experience. Shave the hair around the base of the penis, so the pump creates a good seal and hair doesn’t get pulled. Very short hair is ok, but smooth skin is better.

Use lubrication. Apply a little personal lubricant to the base of the penis and the pump’s opening to help create a better seal.
Read the instructions. Using a penis pump is pretty straightforward, but read the instructions to understand how to use it fully.
Wear the ring for 30 minutes max. Penis constriction rings restrict blood flow to and from the penis and can cause numbness or damage if worn for more than 30 minutes.
Possible risks and side effects from using a penis pump.
Using a penis pump to stretch the penis too far beyond its limit may cause side effects. If any of these side effects occur, stop immediately.
Pain and bruising: Bruising under the skin and other painful injuries.
Skin numbness, tingling, or discoloration: If any of these occur, the penis restriction ring may be too tight. Stop immediately and replace the ring with a larger one.
Burst blood vessels: Small red dots appear under the skin.
Lack of firmness for naturally-achieved erections: If ED is not an issue and a pump is only being used to create a larger, firmer erection, future naturally-achieved erections might not be as firm. This happens when the penis is over-pumped and stretched too far beyond its limits.
These side effects are not showstoppers, but they are notable.
Lack of firmness: A lack of firmness at the base of the penis is common. Press the opening of the penis pump firmly against the base of the penis before and during pumping to minimize this. Also, pumping to the desired erection size, releasing the pressure, and pumping again while keeping the pump’s base firmly against you the entire time helps reduce the lack of firmness at the base of the penis.
Unnatural feeling erections: An erection might not feel natural. A lack of being turned on may cause an unnatural feeling.
The feeling of trapped semen or painful ejaculation: The penis restriction ring does a great job of trapping blood and, unfortunately, restricting the flow of semen, too. Prevent this by pulling the ring away from the bottom of the penis during ejaculation. We recommend using a set of penis rings with tabs.
How do you use a penis pump?
Successfully getting an erection that’s firm enough to have penetrative sex using a penis pump can be challenging, especially if you have severe ED or impotence. These instructions, practice, and patience are essential for successfully creating an erection using a pump.
Start by getting comfortable and relaxed. Have a towel, personal lubricant, restriction ring set with tabs, and penis pump ready and accessible.
The woman can help by lying next to her husband and stoke his inner thighs or stimulate his testicles with her hand or small vibrator while he pumps. Patience, understanding, and some extra stimulation from the woman go a long way.
- Ensure the base of the penis is shaved so the penis pump achieves a good seal. Short hair works ok, but smooth skin is best.
- Stretch out the penis restriction ring, and place it around the opening of the pump. Use a ring with tabs and orient it so that one tab is near the underside of the penis so the ring can be easily pulled away from the penis’ bottom during ejaculation.
- Apply personal lubricant to the base of the penis and in the seal of the pump.
- Press the opening of the penis pump over the penis and hold it firmly against the base of the penis.
- Slowly start pumping to draw the penis into the cylinder.
- Stop pumping, and test the pressure release valve to make sure it’s working and you know how to release the pressure quickly. You don’t want to get stuck not being able to release the pressure quickly if you need to later on!
- Start pumping again, and slowly create the desired erection. It’s going to feel odd the first time you pump, but if you feel pain, stop immediately and let the pressure out.
- When the desired erection has been achieved, pull the ring off the end of the pump onto the base of the penis, and then release the pressure, remove the pump, and get busy!
Important: Do not wear the restriction ring for more than 30 minutes.
How long will the effects of using a penis pump last?
It depends. The erection should last long enough to have sex, but the quality of the erection will vary depending on each man and his condition.
If the erection is not firm enough or doesn’t last long enough, try pumping again and use a smaller constriction ring.
How often can I use a penis pump?
If the penis pump is used correctly, it can be used several times a day if desired.
